GPS Systems

GPS satellites were steadily launched from 1974 to 1994, with the 24th such satellite being launch in 1994. The system is maintained and operated by the U.S. Department of Defense. Periodically, new satellites are launched to replace older ones.

Today, use of GPS technology is free for everyone. And while the technology has continued to improve, the cost of GPS devices has fallen. Even the smallest GPS receivers are more accurate than ever, and more affordable.

The application of GPS technology is widespread. Handheld GPS devices are used by outdoors enthusiasts to help navigate the wild. More and more cars come equipped with GPS technology. As this is a technology relatively new to civilians, it seems to be something that will only continue to grow in application options and overall use.
