GPS Accessories

Sometimes, the most basic GPS unit is all you need when traveling. However, GPS accessories can significantly enhance the performance and convenience of your GPS. There are a wide variety of these accessories available—everything from a carrying case to new software.

One of the most popular GPS accessories is the device mount, which allows the portable GPS to be mounted in a stationary position on the dashboard of a car without sliding around or having to be held by the driver. Some of these mounts are meant to stick to the dash permanently, but there are also mounts that are not permanent, allowing the device to be used in multiple vehicles and in different areas of the vehicle. These can be very useful for someone who frequently travels in rental cars, for example.

Cables, adapters and rechargeable batteries are other popular GPS accessories. These are especially important with regard to handheld GPS devices, which do not connect to a direct power source but rely on battery technology. Additionally, accessories as simple as GPS cases are popular because they make your handheld or portable GPS easier to transport without damaging it.

Finally, software is often available designed to improve or enhance GPS navigation. Often this can be something as simple as a new map. Tracking software is also available for some devices. This particular kind of software allows the GPS signal to be sent to a remote location, often the home computer, so that the movements of the driver (or walker) can be followed.
